A VR project showcasing young people's perspectives on their local area, heritage, and identities. Created entirely from their own artwork, the experience is the result of a series of creative workshops supported by Open Doors with Suthers School students.
Samantha visited a local school to work with two groups of young people, guiding them through a series of creative workshops to explore their perspectives on Newark. Through activities such as making protest placards and collaging, they expressed their thoughts and ideas about the town. These creative explorations became the foundation for planning a VR experience, allowing the young people to shape and develop their vision further.
To begin the artistic process for the VR environment, they experimented with foam printing, transforming their concepts into visual elements for the final piece.
The artwork
Throughout the day, the young people had the opportunity to learn how to draw in VR using Open Brush, allowing them to explore their creativity in a fully immersive 360-degree space.

The exhibition
The exhibition showcased the incredible creativity of the young people involved in the project. Hosted by Suthers School, the event brought together family, friends, and supporters to experience the final artwork and VR experience. Guests enjoyed a welcoming atmosphere with a coffee and waffle cart while exploring a display of artwork from the workshops, including prints from the VR environment. Attendees also had the opportunity to step into the VR experience themselves, seeing the young people's ideas come to life. A large interactive colouring board of Suthers School and Newark encouraged participation, and each young person received a special booklet featuring all the artwork as a lasting keepsake of the project.
